Seven times plus-size models slayed the runway

Fresh from her appearance in the second season of Pose, queer multidisciplinary artist Fatima Jamal landed in Florence to take the runway at Stefano Pilati’s AW20 Random Identities show. Taking place in the Italian city’s longest standing train station, the venue was turned into a pulsating underground club bathed in red light, with Jamal taking her turn in a black sequined sheath gown, alongside the likes of Lux Gillespie and Pilati himself.

While shows like Pose, Euphoria and Work in Progress reflect a moment of unprecedented trans, and broader LGBTQ2, representation in Hollywood, some members of the community, like Fatima Jamal, are rightfully skeptical. It’s not that she isn’t thankful or appreciative of the historic strides that have been and are continuing to be made. Fatima Jamal Made History on Florence Runway

The choice to cast Jamal, known by her moniker "FatFemme" to many, is historic in that rarely has a designer of Pilati's caliber ever chosen a Black, trans woman to walk the runway for a menswear institution as prestigious as Pitti Uomo (or any men's fashion week, for that matter.)
