Seven times plus-size models slayed the runway

Fresh from her appearance in the second season of Pose, queer multidisciplinary artist Fatima Jamal landed in Florence to take the runway at Stefano Pilati’s AW20 Random Identities show. Taking place in the Italian city’s longest standing train station, the venue was turned into a pulsating underground club bathed in red light, with Jamal taking her turn in a black sequined sheath gown, alongside the likes of Lux Gillespie and Pilati himself.

Fatima Jamal Made History on Florence Runway

The choice to cast Jamal, known by her moniker "FatFemme" to many, is historic in that rarely has a designer of Pilati's caliber ever chosen a Black, trans woman to walk the runway for a menswear institution as prestigious as Pitti Uomo (or any men's fashion week, for that matter.) Fatima Jamal On Life As A Body Of Work

A multi-hyphenate in every sense of the word, 28-year-old Jamal is an artist, a dancer, a model, a filmmaker, a writer, and an activist, although she is probably best known for her work as “FatFemme,” her handle on Instagram and in viral circles of the Internet that originated with her ongoing documentary, No Fats No Femmes. In the documentary, the Brooklyn-based artist uses her life and experiences as a black queer femme as both performance art and the platform to explore what it means to not only survive but thrive in a world that others you.
